Choose the Right Web Host From the Start
by Jim Bruce
Deciding upon a web host for your newly made website can be a confusing proposition. The perfect web host for you is dependent on many factors. If your making your first website, price is probably the determining consideration but this should be the last question you should be asking. The search for the perfect webhost should start with the purpose of your website. The website purpose can be varied. Is your site a personal site to be used for family pictures and albums? Is it a personal site for a club or organization? Is the website to present information on a subject? Or does it have a commercial value or function, like an online store or selling a specific product or service? Or is it going to be a corporate-looking website to promote a name brand? Much of your web hosting needs are determined by the purpose of the site. A personal site needs little and a free to cheap web host will be fine. But commercial sites may need interactive pages, php, databases, cgi-bin, shopping carts, and other packages that are essential to doing business. These are usually only found on paid web hosting services. Actually, business websites must be on paid web hosting. Google and other search engines frown on business sites that are hosted by free services. They believe that if you are legitimate, you make enough money to host your website properly. Storage capacity and bandwidth are two factors you must take into consideration. If you are going to have large downloads that you are selling or giving away, you'll want the space to contain them. This is also true if your website is driven by a large database. Most business websites have 300mb storage capacity or more. Imagine now that your website is up and running. You have some innovative software and programs that you're selling. You launch your sales campaign and all of a sudden, you find that your products are a big hit. People are flocking to your website to buy, buy, buy. Then boom, it all comes crashing down because you didn't take into account the bandwidth capacity when you obtained your web hosting. This actually is more common than you would think. If you think that you might have thousands of customers coming to your website, then you'd better budget the bandwidth for this. Get the biggest bandwidth for your money. Once a bandwidth limit is reached, your website will appear offline to your visitors and this won't be good for your business. Those are the biggest considerations you should think about when shopping for a web host. But there are some minor ones too that you should look for. Web hosts have various packages that might include website statistics, guestbooks, ecommerce packages, and other fringe benefits. Website statistics are important for tracking the progress of your website and finding out how many visitors you are getting, where they're coming from, and when search engine spiders visit. Ecommerce packages might include various built-in shopping carts and PayPalŪ merchant accounts. If you are planning on selling products or services through your website you will want to be sure that your webhost has a good ecommerce package. Going along with this, your website has to be interactive. This means that you need to have a web host that allows for this. Free web hosts don't allow you to be interactive so you will have to pay for this. The host should have the ability to allow php scripts, perl scripts, and have a cgi-bin. It's also nice if your web host gives you multiple email addresses. You can use these for various aspects of your business and they will all end in @yourbusiness.com showing others that you are legitimate. Shop wisely when you look for a web host. Don't just use price as the prevailing reason for the one you pick. Also remember, you might be starting small today, but in the future you may expand. It's best to start with a web host that will fill the needs of today but will also fill the dreams of tommorrow.
